My visit to the falls was great, first time in Canada and we had an amazing time. Beside the falls there are plenty of things to see and do. Because there are a few things to do on this list that we didn’t know about until we got there, I want to share with you my top things to do in Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls is comprise by three falls, the smaller Bridal Veil Falls, American Falls, and the biggest in North America Horseshoe Falls. And the flow rate is more than six million cubic feet (168,000 m3) of water every minute, which is the highest in the world. The beating of the water on the rocks, the quantity of water falling down the cliff, and the mist that can be seen from several miles away is amazing.
1. Hornblower Cruise
In my opinion the boat tour gives the best experience. If you are gonna do an attraction it has to be this one. You can do it either in the Canada side (Horblwer Cruise) or in the U.S. side (Maid of the mist). Both are good since they basically do the same trip. It’s a 20 minutes ride in which you will first pass by the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and then get up-close to the powerful Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Be ready to get wet. For tickets go to Niagara Parks website.
Quick Tip: Bring plastics bags to protect your electronics.
2. Journey Behind the Falls
You will descend 150 feet to the tunnels behind the falls where you can hear and feel the power of the Horseshoe Falls as soon as you get out of the lift. There is also the observation deck for those pictures from the foot of the fall. What is really cool about this attraction is that you get to listen the thunderous sound of the falls and you get to see them from below on the observation deck. For tickets visit Niagara Parks
3. Niagara on the Lake
A must do. This small town is the most beautiful I have ever been. It literally looked like a movie set. It is 30 minutes north of the falls and make sure you take Niagara Pkwy all the way for a beautiful scenic drive along the river, vineyards, and beautiful neighbourhoods. This route also pass by the Floral Clock.
4. White Water Walk
The whirlpools or White Water Walk is 10 minutes from the falls by car. Here you can walk alongside Niagara River’s Class 6 rapids. There are several view platforms that will let you be right at the edge of the rapids, and are good spots for photos. It was impressive to see the water moving at 48Km/h or 29 mph. I know 48k/h does not seem fast but believe it fast for water.
5. Bike around the vineyards
If you are a wine lover then this is the perfect activity for you. Rent a bike and go explore the vineyards and wineries. With over 20 wineries on the area you have plenty to choose. If we had known this before hand, we would’ve done it without thinking it twice. Although we went to a couple by car. If you come on your own car I would recommend to bring your own bikes to save some money. Click here for more information.
6. Visit both sides
I highly recommend visiting both sides. On the U.S. side you can get closer to the falls but on the Canada side you have a better view of them. If you are staying over night, definitely stay in Canada. It is way prettier and there is a lot more to do.
7. Whirpool Jet
If you have some money to spend, the boat looks like a lot of fun. I did not get to do it but as per their website ($63 per adult and $45 per child) you will spend 45 minutes learning about the history of Niagara River and playing in the class 5 whitewater rapids.
8. Ontario Lake
On this one you can kill two birds with one stone since Niagara on the lake is by the lake (hence the name). When we left the falls area the sky was all overcast and as we approached the lake the sky cleared up adding a bit of magic to the place. With the light blue color of the ski and the water acting as mirror and blending the horizon, at moments I felt like I was in Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie – Inception. The photo doesn’t make justice to the effect.
9. Stroll Oakes Garden Theatre
Excellent place to relax, people watching, and get away from the crowds. I was impressed of how empty the garden area was, I could count the people with the fingers of my hand. We took a stroll, took some pictures, and then sat on the railing peacefully admiring the beauty of the falls.
10. Watch the Fireworks
The fireworks is a show you cannot miss. The light up falls and the fireworks make a beautiful scenery. Check the schedule before you go since it changes regularly. Get there at least 40 minuets in advance if you want to take pictures. Unfortunately, after one minute we could not see nothing but smoke. Don’t know if it’s normal or was because it was drizzling.
Which of these do you think will be your favourite thing to do? And don’t forget to check video!
