The Best View of Cabo San Lucas

March 12, 2018
Mt Solmar Cabo San Lucas

Want to know where is the best view in Cabo San Lucas that not even the locals know about?  Of course you do!

To enjoy the incredible view you will need to do some workout hiking Mt Solmar. As they say, nothing good comes easy.

Mt. Solmar is a hill part of Land’s End near the marina of Cabo San Lucas. It features a breathtaking 360 view to the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Cortez, and the bustling marina.

To find the trails that leads to the top you will have to go through Enrique’s private property, a dog shelter and training kennel. Don’t worry, he’s a nice guy and the dogs are friendly.

I recommend you talk with him if possible, so he can explain you the trails and what ribbons’ colour to follow, since they change from time to time. If he’s not there that’s ok, the gate is always open during the day and I will do my best to show you the route to get to the top.

Fortunately we got there just in time to catch him on his morning walk with the dogs. We walked with him the first section of the path which is the easy part. He told us about the two trails to go up and what ribbons to follow.

The first trail is short but a bit challenging, the second one is easy but longer. We decided to take short way up.

The first glimpse of the view.

Before you really start going up you’ll pass a small set of stairs and then Poor’s Beach (the photo above) as the locals call it.

As soon as you start following the orange ribbons the trail will get steep. As you can see on picture there are loads of loose rocks, so be careful and watch your step. Although it wasn’t as bad as I read, you will need to use both hands most of the time for leverage and you will sweat the fat drop {as we say in Puerto Rico}. Don’t believe me?  See my shirt on the photo below.

Days in Cabo San Lucas are sunny and hot. In my opinion that’s what make the hike challenging. You won’t be half way up when you will break a sweat.

Yes we made it!

The good thing is that you can take as many breaks as you need and enjoy the view, you don’t have to wait to get to the top enjoy the view. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the top.

Quick motivation tip: You know you’re almost on the top, not when you see the cross for the first time, but when it disappears.

The 360 view from atop is just incredible. On the south you see Land End’s astonishing rock formations, on the west you have the Pacific Ocean and its waves crashing on the shore, on the north the bustling marina, and on the east the beautiful Sea of Cortez. And if you go on season, you might be able to see whales in the Pacific.

There is no shade on the top, but you can manage to find a little bit by sitting beside of the bigger rocks.

This spot is definitely a hidden gem in plain sight. From all the time we spent up there only saw four people, two coming down and two on the top.

View of Divorce Beach and Land’s End.

If you are up for it, you can keep going and get to Divorce Beach and Lovers Beach. We thought on doing it but ran out of water and were very thirsty and hungry. There are a couple of vendors at Lovers Beach but we needed something heavier to eat.

To return, you can take the easy but longer trail since the way you go up is more difficult to climb down than climb up. To find it quicker you can use the picture above as a reference.

When we got back to the shelter Enrique saw how thirsty we were and gave us a bottle of electrolyte water, which came like a gift fallen from the sky {He is the best!}.

Don’t forget to tip him. He maintains and keep the trails marked, and could easily charge people for passing through the property. The view is well worth it.

Things to know

Location – The dog shelter is almost at the end of Blvd. Paseo de la Marina, across the street from the Navy offices on the right hand side.

Parking – If you have a rented car, know that you will have to park at one of the parking lots that are little before you get to the shelter. One of them is a public parking, and the other one is private, part of Embarcadero Plaza.

Public parking address: Finisterra Centro, Marina 23450 Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S.

Tips

  • Bring plenty of water! We took two 16 oz bottles with us and they were not enough.
  • Bring a small backpack to keep the bottles, you will need both hands free to climb up.
  • Wear tennis shoes and not flip-flops. There is a lot of  loose rocks and the climb quite steep.
  • Put on sun screen. As I said earlier there isn’t any shade and the sun in Baja California is strong.

I hope this post help you enjoy the breathtaking views from Mt Solmar. Feel free to share it with friends.
